摘要

Some patients may require critical care support after planned or urgent colorectal procedures. Conversely, critically ill patients in the intensive care units (ICU) may occasionally need to undergo emergency colorectal surgery. This patient demographic is expanding in certain regions due to an aging population and rising societal expectations. This group often includes elderly and frail individuals or those with significant medical comorbidities. When obtaining consent, it is crucial to carefully assess operative risks, including the need for prolonged intensive care support. In high-risk patients, especially in the setting of unplanned surgery, it is vital to clearly define treatment goals and establish an appropriate level of care.
