Percutaneous Ultrasound-Guided Gastrostomy Placement

Gastrostomy tube placement is an extremely common procedure. Since it was first performed by surgeons, several other techniques have become available, most recently percutaneous ultrasound-guided techniques. Ultrasound gives a wide variety of trained practitioners the ability to place gastrostomy tubes at the bedside without the need for expensive fluoroscopy suites or endoscopic towers. It has been shown to be similarly safe and effective compared to other percutaneous techniques along with reducing/eliminating potential radiation dose/exposure and eliminating logistical transport planning for patients. Patients can receive a gastrostomy tube earlier, which has been shown to reduce cost and length of stay within the intensive care units and general hospital admissions. Overall, percutaneous ultrasound-guided gastrostomy tube placement is a safe and feasible alternative compared to surgically placed gastrostomy tubes and other percutaneous techniques.
