Ballast Water Management System Infrastructure

Ballast systems are to provide a reliable means of filling, transferring and draining ballast tanks employing a ballast water management system through the provisions of redundancy, certification of ballast water management system pumps and suitable remote control. A ballast system design that includes all piping, pumps, valves, and other ancillary piping equipment is to comply with the criteria for ballast systems as mandated by the relevant sections of the applicable Class Rules. Additional ballast system piping requirements for oil tankers, gas carriers, and chemical carriers, including specific safety arrangements, are to comply with the relevant provisions of the applicable Class Rules for these categories of vessels. Where the ballast system has a capacity that exceeds the treatment rated capacity of an in-line ballast water management system, an appropriate flow control arrangement must be provided for the safe conduct of the ballast pumps.
