Ventilation System Related and Installation Criteria Requirements

On vessels where the ballast water management system is installed within the machinery space, such as the engine room, it is a standard requirement that the equipment is located in a well-ventilated area. Where the ballast water management system is installed in a separate compartment that is not deemed a hazardous area and does not serve any ballast tanks which are hazardous, the space must be fitted with an independent mechanical extraction ventilation system which is capable of providing a minimum of six air changes per hour, or as many as specified by the ballast water management system manufacturer, whichever is greater.
