Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): A Powerful Contextual Approach to Promoting Youth Mental Health in Schools
摘要
This book chapter explores the potential of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) as a functional contextual approach for fostering youth mental health and well-being within school settings. ACT places emphasis on psychological flexibility, mindfulness, and value-based action. The chapter provides an overview of the key principles and techniques of ACT and highlights its relevance and applicability in the context of schools. It emphasizes the importance of promoting psychological flexibility skills and value-driven actions to address a wide range of student concerns, including anxiety, peer relationships, and student attendance. The chapter also reviews existing literature on the effectiveness of ACT interventions in schools, showcasing positive outcomes such as improved well-being, reduced symptoms, and enhanced academic performance. The empirical evidence suggests the effectiveness of ACT interventions across different levels of the multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) framework. However, additional research is necessary to further expand the evidence base for ACT in schools and to explore its integration with other evidence-based practices for students, teachers, and parents. Overall, the chapter emphasizes the potential of ACT as a valuable approach to promote youth mental health and well-being within the school environment.
