The Environmental Dimension of Poverty

The previous chapter introduced the framework adopted by the DPA in which social structure and human agency are conceptualized as intertwined and metabolized by individuals (Greenhalgh & Stones, 2010; Stones, 2005). In this chapter, we start by introducing the core aspects of environmental poverty and its intrinsic connection with monetary poverty. This helps us understand why the environmental component, intended as inseparable from poverty, should also be considered integral to digital poverty and its related inequalities. The chapter introduces the concept of environmental poverty and the existing approaches to tackle it. It also refers to the literature on ecological values and green consumption, which supports connections with both digital behaviors and digital consumption.
