The terahertz (THz) frequency range has sparked considerable attention for its innovative applications in biology due to its non-ionizing properties and ability to permeate a wide range of materials. This chapter delves into the developing topic of terahertz technology in biomedicine, focusing on sensing and imaging modalities. Terahertz radiation interacts with biological tissues unusually, allowing for non-destructive imaging and assessment. THz imaging reveals differing absorption characteristics in malignant and healthy tissues, providing a non-invasive approach to early cancer detection. The field of skin imaging provides information about characteristics that are beneath the surface, such as sweat ducts and skin lesions. Further, this chapter explores how terahertz sensors assume a crucial role in pharmaceutical analysis, bimolecular sensing, and the monitoring of water content in diverse materials. Challenges include resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and the complexity of instrumentation. Nevertheless, ongoing research envisions advanced imaging techniques like THz time-domain imaging and computed tomography, while also exploring therapeutic applications and miniaturization for portable systems. Terahertz technology stands poised to revolutionize healthcare diagnostics, providing innovative solutions to enhance disease detection, treatment, and overall patient care.
