Security Threats and Privacy Challenges in Millimeter-Wave Communications

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication, operating in the high-frequency spectrum between 30 and 300 GHz, is poised to revolutionize the world of wireless connectivity. mmWave communications promises to deliver high-speed (upto 10 Gbps), low-latency wireless connectivity in the 5G era and beyond. It can be used to provide high-speed internet access to homes and businesses, as well as to support new applications such as virtual reality and augmented reality. However, the adoption of mmWave technology comes with a host of security threats and privacy challenges that demand careful consideration. This book chapter explores the multifaceted landscape of security threats and privacy challenges specific to mmWave communication. The unique characteristics of mmWave technology, such as its directional nature and susceptibility to signal blockage, which introduce novel security vulnerabilities are discussed. Then, the different security and privacy threats that can be posed to mmWave networks are reviewed. Finally, the different security and privacy mechanisms that can be used to protect mmWave networks are elaborated. The chapter emphasizes the need for comprehensive security strategies to defend against evolving threats in mmWave networks. The chapter concludes by discussing the open research challenges in security and privacy for mmWave communications.
