Localized Corrosion in Saline Environments

This chapter focuses on applications involving either immersion in or exposure to saline water solutions. BN models may be useful in these systems because of the interactions amongst many factors. The aim of this chapter is not to be comprehensive, but to show the benefits of using BN to integrate the knowledge base in different corrosion areas. Corrosion of passive alloys in marine systems and corrosion under insulation has been studied for several decades and a database exists. The fundamental bases for corrosion in these systems are considered in constructing the BN models. It is shown that BN can integrate fundamental knowledge with practical, engineering experience to construct a system model. The model can be validated using long-term exposure tests. These models can also serve as knowledge analytic tools for artificial intelligence (AI) systems for corrosion.
