Individual Virtues, Social Benefits
摘要
I start and end with the important notion that the economy is intimately interwoven with the whole social system. The economy is not just the market. It relates to all activity for making things and consuming things, whether done by a family, a government, or any other body. The economic aspect of interaction is not the only aspect. Gossip at the barbers is as important as haircutting. Whether and how people interact is influenced by the price of a haircut and many other things. The economy involves how we see ourselves, and how we relate to others. Can and should economic analysis and policy take some account of these considerations?
