Introduction

This introduction provides the thematic framework of the present volume Keeping Peace in Troubled Times—Perspectives from Different Disciplines on War and Peace. It pursues two objectives: to offer a theoretical perspective (Part I Conceptualizing Peace and War) and insights based on empirical research and practical work (Part II Examples of War and Peacebuilding) regarding both peace and war. The multi-perspectivity of the topics presented here results from the international origins of the contributors and their interest in global politics and its repercussions for local populations. In addition to questions on the military use of artificial intelligence and its ethical consequences, the contributors offer insights into Turkish foreign policy, the evaluation of war and peace in different world religions, the role of ideas of unity in the field of philosophy, which has always had an influence on the respective state leadership, as well as on the role of emotions in relation to war decisions and peace-building measures. Other topics include juvenile radicalization using the example of children socialized at the Islamic State (IS) and their possible reintegration in non-jihadist countries of origin. Additionally, it contains an evaluation of feminist security policy and the role of women in peacekeeping, the coexistence of different cultures and religions exemplified by artistic desiderata for a better world. Furthermore, the problem of online radicalization and recruitment and its active prevention in the field of practical social work, which is crucial for democracies, are discussed in the framework of this edited volume.
