The Role of the Media in Educating Governments and Societies About the Impact of Disasters

The study investigated the role of media in educating governments and societies about the impact of earthquakes taking the example of Turkey and northern Syria. It involved nine crisis management experts who were contacted between February 6, 2023, and February 29, 2023. The study findings highlighted the significant role played by the media in educating the society during and after the earthquake. Experts expressed skepticism towards the collapse scenario, considering it weak and unlikely, and showed a strong preference for the fundamental transformation scenario. This preference was attributed to the scenario’s potential in controlling the earthquake’s repercussions and its importance in the stage of recovery after the earthquake. The media’s awareness campaign on the earthquake’s damage was identified as a contributing factor.
