Investigation of Burnout Due to Online Learning During Covid-19 Pandemic at Technical and Vocational Education and Training University Using Maslach Burnout Inventory

Pandemic instigated by Covid-19 had caused many economic sectors forced to close including the education industry. During its peak, the effects of this Covid-19 pandemic have generated significant cause for concern among those who had enrolled to higher education. Very quickly, the educational system has been transformed from standard face-to-face classroom to virtual platforms to avoid disruption to the teaching and learning activities. Over time, the online learning system became stressful and exhausted to the university students especially for those who have difficulty adapting to the new changes. As the development in online education continued, the responsibilities on online academics had increased, potentially leading to the burnout. This research was conducted to investigate the burnout level in higher education among universities students at TVET university using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS). This cross-sectional quantitative study involved bachelors’ students from various programs. Several statistical methods such as mean score analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient, and independent samples t-test were used to analyze results from the survey. This study showed that emotional exhaustion contributed most to the burnout issue among the students and there was a relationship between the burnout dimensions. Male and female students were having similar opinion with regards to burnout except in the area of cynicism. Recommendations to overcome burnout in students are included.
