Layering Techniques and Morphology Modeling

Depending on the clinical case, the dentist’s experience, and the manufacturers’ instructions for different composite materials, the working techniques can be combined or modified so that the final result is satisfactory and predictable. However, this multitude of options can also be a disadvantage, leading to unpredictable results if the appropriate layering technique is not chosen. This may cause dissatisfaction with the aesthetics of the results obtained both among dentist and patients. This chapter will focus on some of the most frequently used layering techniques and the realization of the morphology of direct restorations on anterior and posterior teeth: anatomic stratification technique for class IV cavities, additive restoration techniques for incisal edges, simplified layering technique for fourth- and third-class cavities, monoshade technique, successive cusp technique, symmetric cusp technique, simultaneous cusp technique, stamp technique, essential line technique, and bilaminar technique.
