Pre-restoration Procedures That Are Carried Out Before Direct Restoration

In all cases, some pre-restoration procedures are needed. If necessary, for some cases, duplication procedures (occlusal key, palatal key, individualized ring for matrices) or supragingival cavity margin acquisition techniques (deep margin elevation, gingivectomy, crown lengthening) may be performed. Rubber dam isolation is mandatory for a direct restoration. For class two cavities, pre-separation and protection of neighboring teeth (prewedging, wedgeguarding) may be very helpful. This chapter will be focusing on techniques for replicating a preexisting morphology, deep margin acquisition (DMA) techniques, rubber dam isolation, adjacent tooth and papilla protection techniques (prewedging and WedgeGuards), cavity design and preparation techniques, cavity finishing and evaluation using caries detectors, beveling, teeth separation, pulp protection, indirect pulp capping and direct pulp capping.
