Introduction

This chapter demonstrates the significance and background of this study through a textual investigation into the position of the theory of four stages holds in Early Buddhism, particularly in Theravāda Buddhist soteriology and philosophy. Then, the chapter demonstrates the rationale for the present study by reviewing what has been done by modern scholars of Buddhist studies on the selected topic. Finally, the chapter demonstrates the methodologies employed in this book.
