NLP Applications—Other Biomedical Texts

This chapter introduces sublanguages complementary to the biomedical literature, clinical notes, and social media. These sublanguages are found in drug labels, descriptions of clinical trials in the official registries, patents, death certificates and disability claims. All these documents are important to the healthcare process and clinical research. NLP applications are needed to leverage these resources as much as they are needed to process the literature and clinical text. The chapter discusses language technologies applied to these specialized resources, data, and shared tasks. As with other sublanguages and document types, the end-goals of the applications and user needs determine which knowledge sources and language technologies should be used to achieve the goals.
