What and Why of Equity for Whom and Where. Analytical Engagement with Languaging Promises-in-Policy and Policy-as-Participation

This chapter expands language policy analytical engagements by drawing attention to the need for using cross-sectorial, multi-scalar materials from across digital-analogue spaces. It analytically explores dimensions of democracy and social justice that get framed as equity in contemporary timespaces by engaging with materials where languaging plays different roles. Bringing together a two-fronted conceptual framing that aligns with ongoing epistemological shifts of relevance to equity-related language policies, it illuminates how the mundane-ness of social practices related to texts, peoples, and institutions accounts, and the flow of everyday life gets implicated in knowledge creation. Its key point of departure is that all policies are languaged. This chapter interrogates promises of equity as these play out in contemporary north-centric settings like Sweden that are framed as democracies.
