Associating Textual Features

  • Alexander Samely

摘要

The current chapter addresses links-designate that the reader can discover as having arisen from associating with each other formal-material, at times ‘poetic’, features of the text. These connections do not indicate directly any text-world features. They may arise from word choices, morpheme meanings, layouts, rhymes and limitless other formal or material facets of the text. The reader may encounter them in reflection on the basis of passive synthesis. A protocol of my reading of certain lines in Eliot’s ‘Little Gidding’ documents the process of a reader discovering that they have lived through such formal-material relationships. The chapter explores the encounter with ‘metaphorical’ meanings through related categories.
