Telemedicine for the Provision of Gender-Affirming Care for Trans Youth

“Trans youth” is an umbrella term used to describe adolescents and young adults with a range of gender identities that do not align with their sex assigned at birth or conventional gender roles. This vulnerable group faces considerable disparities compared to their cisgender counterparts in access to healthcare services. While gender-affirming care has been associated with benefits to mental health and well-being, there are many barriers to accessing this. Telemedicine may be able to address some of these challenges. This model of care provides an easier, less costly way for trans youth to access specialized care. Telemedicine could also aid collaborative, multidisciplinary gender care and capacity building for local healthcare providers. Further, telemedicine might help reduce fear of discrimination and negative experiences in healthcare settings. Youth and families who have participated in telemedicine visits are generally satisfied and describe this as a safe alternative for provision of care. Some important considerations for successful delivery of gender-affirming care via telemedicine include ensuring a welcoming and safe environment, offering to disable self-view if it is distressing for the youth, and creating a space for private and confidential discussions.
