Nicotine Use Disorder
摘要
Nicotine use disorder is a growing problem among older adults. It is a chronic and relapsing condition and contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality. All older adults should be assessed for tobacco use and motivation to quit. The three Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications for smoking cessation are varenicline, bupropion, and nicotine replacement therapy. The combination of pharmacotherapy and behavioral intervention is most effective for older adults motivated to quit smoking. Cessation interventions can be very effective and beneficial for older adults. More research is needed specifically in the population of older adults to determine the most effective cessation interventions and relapse prevention.
