Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizoaffective disorder is largely understudied in the older adult. Most of the research falls under schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and the older adult is rarely studied individually. Schizoaffective disorder shares symptomatology with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Patients with schizoaffective disorder have increased morbidity and mortality. Treatment is aimed at reducing symptoms with the use of antipsychotics and social skills interventions to improve symptoms and quality of life. ECT has also been shown to benefit individuals with schizoaffective disorder although treatment guidelines are not well established.
