Fertilizer and Coal Gas Making
摘要
Driven by the urgent needs for ammonia for his Solvay soda operation and fertilizer in Britain Ludwig Mond entered into the world of coal gasification in a belief that he would be able to fix Air-N inside a gasifier to make ammonia. Having found that the ammonia coming out of the gasifier was from coal-N instead of the Air-N he went deeper into the world and developed the Mond gas producer. Then along the works between the Solvay soda operation and the Mond gas producer Mond accomplished a several pioneering achievements such as the commercialization of the Solvay soda process dominating the industry, the discovery of the special chemistry with carbon monoxide that led him to revolutionize the nickel refining process, and the development of the fuel cell prototype and so forth. In achieving these significant milestones Mond demonstrated the values and importance of a steady and methodical investigation of natural phenomena to the development of industrial progresses, which placed science and chemistry a step closer to the development of the industrial process.
