The invention and the subsequent industrial deployment of gas engines would not be possible without coal gas. Once the coal gas fired and soon the Dowson producer gas fired gas engines had become the indispensable prime drivers, supplementary to steam engines during the ongoing industrial revolution, the coal gas and producer gas as clean fuel gases quickly penetrated almost every corner of the economic development and started to push the energy transition a step further by moving more coals away from the direct coal burning.  .
