Reinventing the Coal Gas Making

The demand for electricity, fertilizers, chemicals and especially liquid fuels between the two wars had created an enormous potential market for coal gasification. Such a strong demand placed a significant amount of stress and strain as well to the local coal mining business in Germany, which in turn pushed the low quality and low rank coals such as high moisture brown coals and lignite tot the market place. Driven by the low quality and low rank coals as feedstock coal gasification technology was forced to reinvent itself in order to manufacture the urgently needed syngas for those planned liquid fuel projects of either the hydrogenation process or the Fischer-Tropsch process. The gasification processes developed in this round of innovation appear, somehow, to have managed to manufacture the wanted syngas to the operations of their respective downstream plants, of course, with different level successes. Among the gasification processes invented at the time there stood out a special gasification process, though in a negative way, that would become the focal point for future modern gasification technology to focus on.
