Unveiling the Link of Vitamin D and Diverse Cardiovascular Disorders: Current Status and Future Prospective

Cardiovascular disorders (CVD’s) are the major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, mainly among Western countries, despite development and advancement in currently available treatment strategies. Vitamin D is speculated to play a crucial role in calcium and phosphorus homeostasis and the facilitation of several immune functions. Indeed, a few years back, it was reported that deficiency/insufficiency of vitamin D plays an important role in causing various pathological conditions, including inflammation, oxidative stress, vascular remodeling, endothelial dysfunction etc., which are the crucial risk factors for numerous CVD’s including coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial infarction (MI), pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), left ventricular hypertrophy, cardiomyopathy, fibrosis, and heart failure (HF). Additionally, studies also witnessed that vitamin D mediates the promotion of several effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-fibrotic, and anti-hypertensive through regulation of the expression of different signaling pathways. This chapter aimed to contextualize the link between vitamin D and major CVDs in terms of its prevalence clinical and prognostic relevance along with their supporting evidence. We will also be focusing on the role and signaling mechanisms of vitamin D therapy in the management of several CVD’s. The present book chapter will certainly provide valuable information for the researchers/scientists working in the field of cardiovascular disorders to translate the therapeutic utility of vitamin D in various clinical settings.
