Vitamin D and Immune Function: Unraveling the Connections

Vitamin D, traditionally renowned for its function in regulating calcium levels and promoting skeletal health, has become a focus of scientific investigation because of its complex involvement in immune system modulation. This chapter focuses on its immune function and comprehensively explores the multifaceted functions of vitamin D, its relevance to autoimmune disorders, susceptibility to infections, and the potential usefulness of dietary vitamin D supplements. Recent discoveries have brought to light the existence of vitamin D receptors on immune cells, which facilitate the formation of active vitamin D metabolites. This underscores the dual action of vitamin D in protecting bone homeostasis while modulating immune responses. In particular, low blood levels of vitamin D have been linked with a higher susceptibility to autoimmune disorders, underscoring its critical importance. While vitamin D supplementation shows promise for immune enhancement, clinical findings have yielded inconclusive results, requiring further investigation. To optimize immune function and overall well-being, maintaining optimal vitamin D levels (40–60 ng/mL) through judicious sun exposure and judicious supplementation is recommended. This chapter is valuable for understanding the complex interplay between the immune system and vitamin D, which goes beyond its classical function in calcium regulation and skeletal health. This underscores the imperative to comprehensively understand the diverse functions of vitamin D, especially among individuals at increased threat of autoimmune conditions and increased susceptibility to infectious agents.
