Given this central role, thiamine deficiencyDeficiency leads to widespread organ system dysfunction, most prominently in the nervous and cardiovascular systems. While severe thiamine deficiency can cause high-output heart failureHeart failure secondary to peripheral vasodilation, and profound hypotension, there is a complex interplay between clinically relevant thiamineThiamine deficiency and cardiovascular disorders such as heart failureHeart failure and diabetes mellitusDiabetes mellitus. In this article, we sought to describe the metabolismMetabolism of thiamine and its clinical importance, and the relevance of thiamine deficiency primarily in cardiovascular disorders.
