摘要

OsteoporosisOsteoporosis is a global ongoing issue resulting in high fractureFractures rate. The associated morbidity and mortality with these fractures results in economic burden. The dietary habits play an important role in preventionPrevention of osteoporosis. It is an established fact that calcium plays a major role in maintenance of bone mineral densityBone mineral density (BMD) as well as in preventionPrevention and reversal of osteoporotic symptoms. Modification in dietDiet and lifestyleLifestyle changes have been considered as an effective approach to seize osteoporosis in general population. In addition to Vitamin DVitamin D, the role of Vitamin B-complex has been considered important for bone healthHealth. A number of studies have investigated the mechanistic pathways of B-complex vitamins that influence the bone mass, bone structureStructure and quality. Amongst all the B-vitamins; B6, B9 and B12 have been considered important and are said to play protective role for bone health. This chapter focusses on mechanistic pathways and role of Vitamin B12Vitamin B12 in preventionPrevention of osteoporosisOsteoporosis and related fractures. The published peer-reviewed articles and clinical trials that were taken under consideration, showed inconsistency on the role played by B12 in osteoporosisOsteoporosis. It was also observed that the distinct metabolic and mechanistic pathways of these vitamin and its role in maintenance of bone mass is yet to be established. Further studies on investigating these underlying pathways are indicated. Experimental and observational studies on role of B12 in bone health, focusing on South-Asian population is limited and thus require more attention; specifically in this part of the world as these population are more susceptible to osteoporotic fracturesFractures.
