In digital electronics two main categories of circuits can be identified. Combinatorial circuits carry out very simple operations. Sequential circuits, on the other hand, produce outputs that depend on state transitions, above all those of a clock. These two categories of circuits are fundamental for all digital applications, from processors to memories.
