Electrical Safety in LV Energy Installations

摘要

The chapter aim to present the most important issues regarding electrical safety in low voltage energy installations, starting from the presentation of the related definitions and basic notions, that any intervener in electrical installations should have. In this way, all those who intervene—carry out their activities in these installations will know the basic notions regarding work in such kind of work places. Afterward, are presented common electrical hazards in the workplace and electrical safety tips on what can be done to mitigate the risks. Next, the chapter continues with the summary of the legislative framework in the field of electrical safety and main concepts on safety and health, focusing on risk definition, characteristic elements, and its quantification. Forwards, next part of the chapter depicts the effects of electric current on the human body—as electrical circuit element, the admissible values for electric current through it, and hazardous voltages—touch voltage and step voltage, that can occur when a person/worker directly or indirectly touches an equipment in the installation, which can be supplied with energy or not. In the end were presented methods—protection measures against electric shocks like: different types of grounding schemes specific to LV networks, basic and additional protection measures and special devices/equipment’s like residual current device (RCD) or residual current circuit breaker (RCCB), that provide safe work in low voltage electrical installations and also safe and reliable operation of those electrical equipment’s.
