Bioregional Agroecological Planning: Keys to Building Territorialized and Multifunctional Agrifood Systems

We are facing a long history of systematic dispossession and resource appropriation that is reflected today in the major socio-ecological conflicts over land use in metropolitan areas. Within this context, this chapter suggests an interdisciplinary convergence between the tenets of agroecology, degrowth and the commons to bring a paradigm shift in urban and territorial planning integrated under the concept of Bioregional agroecological urbanism. It provides information about challenges and opportunities for the construction of territorialized and multifunctional agrifood systems at the bioregional and foodshed levels in the context of climate change. It also introduces new pathways to incorporate the rural-urban fringe in territorial and urban planning to improve the identity of the territory, enhance the agrifood system resilience, and prevent unsustainable urban expansion. Finally, it introduces two tools suitable for recovering the city-agriculture-nature relationship such as Green Infrastructure and Agricultural Parks under an agroecological scope.
