Update on New Robotic Devices for Urologic Surgery

For roughly two decades now, robotic urologic surgery has been linked with the use of Intuitive Surgical Inc.’s surgical system, the Da Vinci robot. Over these years, the American company has created a worldwide monopoly in every aspect of laparoscopic robotic surgery, from training and surgical competence certification to equipment sale and after-sales support. With the upcoming arrival of several competitors in the market, the era of this monopoly is about to end probably leading to a wider distribution of robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery. Apart from laparoscopy, several robotic-assisted tools are currently approved for use in transurethral, transrectal, and percutaneous urologic procedures, although their adaptation is mainly limited by the relatively high cost of these technologies. In addition, the wide employment of robots in non-urological medical procedures has already created robotic tools that seek application in urology. While current robotic systems demonstrate several limitations that need to be addressed in the future, the role of robotic technology in urology is on the rise and should be expected to play an even more major role in the years to come.
