Update on New Technology in Laparoscopy

Conventional laparoscopy remains the preferred surgical approach in many urological departments worldwide with well-studied surgical and oncological outcomes. Despite rising interest in robot-assisted surgery, continuous technological advancements make the laparoscopy still appealing for urologists. The documented issues of dexterity and depth of perception are improved with the introduction of ultrahigh definition and three-dimensional camera devices. The use of those systems has been proven to shorten the operative time for both novice and expert surgeons. Higher magnification of the surgical field and the use of the latest energy devices allow meticulous dissection of structures preserving anatomic integrity of organs. In addition, an improvement in intraoperative navigation has been achieved with the aid of recent imaging and high-tech modalities. The further miniaturization of laparoscopy led to the laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) surgery and natural orifices transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) techniques. Despite the advantage of a better cosmetic effect, those approaches have not gained much popularity yet.
