About half of all urological injuries involve the external genitalia, mostly in young men and include injury to the testes, scrotum and penis. Genital trauma is usually caused by motor vehicle accidents and sporting activities. A specific etiology of severe combat-related genital injury is by ground explosives. Genital trauma includes testicular rupture, intratesticular haematoma, haematoceles and penile fracture. Accidents during sexual intercourse can also cause genital trauma, affecting mostly men of younger age and commonly seen as a penile fracture. Coital injury of the female genitalia can happen during consensual or non-consensual sexual intercourse. The most frequently found injuries are lacerations. Blunt vulvar trauma is rarely reported and usually presents as a large haematoma. Although iatrogenic injury to the external genital is uncommon, any genital procedure, including penile prosthesis insertion, circumcision and penile enlargement procedures may result in trauma.
