Injury to the urethra can be due to iatrogenic, blunt or penetrating injury. All segments of the male and female urethra can be injured. Every trauma to the urethra can cause a subsequent urethral stricture or stenosis. Injuries to the male posterior urethra and the female urethra are often related to unstable pelvic fractures. As opposed to the urethral injury, concomitant injuries can be life-threatening and have a higher priority of treatment. Most urethral injuries can be initially treated by urinary diversion followed by urethral reconstruction if necessary. However, in some circumstances, urethral reconstruction must be done more urgently.
