Chronic Pelvic Pain is defined as non-malignant pain in men and women perceived in structures related to the pelvis. The first decision to make is whether this pain is a symptom of a well-known disease or not. If yes, then the cause must be targeted. If no, then this pain is a disease in its own rights and therapy should be focused on the pain itself. Acute pain is a reaction of the brain on nociception, asking for action to prevent further damage. Chronic pain is made by the brain as a behavioral reaction on different, mostly normal input from the periphery. The nature and the magnitude of the pain is influenced by experience, emotions and cognitions. A bio-psycho-social approach is needed to look at the patient with chronic pelvic pain as a whole, as a person.
