This chapter gives an overview of global rights of nature (RoN) movements. It details the origins, outgrowth, and heterogeneity of legal and political developments in the RoN space. Key drivers of these movements across the Global North and South—grassroots organizing, Indigenous thought and leadership, and transnational networks of RoN advocates and organizations, are identified, and a basic typology of RoN instruments provided. In tracing the proliferation of RoN movements worldwide, this chapter illustrates the emergence of RoN as an adaptable norm or template concept, rather than a single unitary movement, and explores the potential utility of RoN as both a practical legal tool and vehicle for broader ideological change.
