Emerging Nanomaterials for Efficient Hydrogen Production

Hydrogen production from water electrolysis has been considered an ultimate solution to energy and environmental issues. Over the past few years, the non-noble metal-based catalyst has greatly improved hydrogen generation performance. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the recent research on non-noble metal-based materials for hydrogen evolution by water electrolysis. It begins with a brief introduction of the current status and basic principles of hydrogen generation from water electrolysis and the tailoring properties of non-noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen generation. Then, the roles of metal alloys, carbides, nitrides, borides, dichalcogenides, and recent emerging non-noble metal catalysts high entropy alloys for hydrogen production are elaborated, respectively. Last, this chapter is concluded with remarks on some challenges and perspectives in this emerging field.
