Deconstructing the New Normal: Prospects and Challenges for Caribbean Societies in and Beyond COVID-19

This chapter provides an overview of this book and the multifaceted impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Caribbean societies, with a focus on economic, social, and psychological dimensions. This book is divided into four parts: Structures and Perspectives, Psychosocial Considerations, Crime and Violence: Vulnerabilities and Solutions, and Institutional, Communal, and National Responses. Each part reveals the impact of COVID-19 such as substantial economic downturns due to the pandemic, particularly in key sectors like tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture in Part I. Part II discusses the wide range of mental health issues resulting from the pandemic along with the strain on healthcare systems, underscoring the need for improved mental health infrastructure and services, as well as emerging post-pandemic trends such as the rise in electronic device usage, e-commerce, and flexible work arrangements. Part III addresses crime and violence in the Caribbean, focusing on behaviors influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, Part IV discusses institutional, communal, and national responses to crises, with a focus on recommendations for responding to future crises.
