Phase II Detoxification Enzymes

Phase I enzymes catalyze the activation metabolism of foreign compounds. Their functionalization reactions incorporate a functional group into a foreign compound, resulting in the formation of an intermediate metabolite, which is then detoxified by phase II metabolic reaction. Phase II enzyme-catalyzed reactions serve as a detoxification process by conjugating the incorporated functional group in a foreign compound with a small, endogenous molecule called conjugating ligand.
