In this chapter, we address the theory of consumers, which is a fundamental concept in the field of engineering of power systems economics. The utility function is key in the development of the theory of consumers. It represents the preferences and satisfaction of consumers for different combinations of goods and services. By quantifying utility, energy engineers can understand consumers’ preferences and make informed decisions regarding resource allocation and pricing strategies in the power systems context. The budget line reflects the budgetary constraints faced by consumers. It represents the combinations of goods and services that consumers can afford given their income and the prices of goods. Energy analysts assess the budget line to understand consumers’ purchasing power and the trade-offs they face when allocating their limited resources. The optimisation problem, from the consumers’ viewpoint, involves maximising utility subject to the constraints represented by the budget line. Engineers can employ this method to determine the optimal consumption bundle that maximises consumer satisfaction within their budgetary limitations. The demand function is derived from the optimisation problem and represents the relationship between the price of a good or service and the quantity demanded by consumers. Understanding the demand function enables energy engineers to analyse the responsiveness of consumers to price changes and make predictions about consumer behaviour in power systems markets. This knowledge contributes to the efficient operation and management of power systems, ultimately benefiting both consumers and providers of electricity.
