Preservice Primary School Teachers’ Experience of Place-Based Education: Porsuk River

This chapter focuses on socioscientific issues (SSI) and place-based learning approaches in primary schools. It also aims to raise awareness about SSI among preservice primary school teachers. The chapter was conducted with preservice primary school teachers from a public university in Eskisehir, Türkiye. In Eskisehir, river pollution is a local SSI. It is caused by rapid population growth, unplanned urbanization, and industrialization. The argumentation technique was used, and primary school preservice teachers discussed and developed solutions to the problems caused by population growth, unplanned urbanization, and industrialization. This chapter discusses the pollution affecting the Porsuk River in Eskişehir and the preservice primary school teachers’ solution for this pollution.
