Any mechanical system used on a ship induces noise and vibration on that vessel. Other equipment, such as transformers, UPSs, and switchgears, need consideration when located in a noise-sensitive compartment. It is essential to understand the overall impact of machinery and equipment on the acoustic environment of the vessel. How it is attached or coupled to the structure will also impact the resulting acoustic environment. In addition to rotating or reciprocating machinery, most vessels have extensive, distributed systems such as piping or HVAC. As discussed in Chap. 6 , these systems can easily transmit noise to remote, sensitive sections of the vessel.
