Neck Infections

Reviewing radiographic imaging and recognizing infections of the neck are crucial skills for radiology residents. All imaging modalities, including radiographs, CT and MRI scans, and ultrasounds, provide valuable information about the structure and function of the soft tissues of the neck, including the lymph nodes, salivary glands, and blood vessels. Accurately interpreting this information will help residents identify and diagnose infections early, leading to improved treatments and, ultimately, better patient outcomes. Infections of the neck can range in severity from minor bacterial infections to deep neck abscesses and necrotizing fasciitis. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent life-threatening complications. Radiographic imaging and expert interpretation can help to identify the location, extent, and severity of infections, providing valuable information for treatment planning. This chapter in conjunction with other chapters in this book that review the various spaces of the neck, their fascial coverings, and their inter-relatedness will ensure that residents are prepared to provide optimal imaging for patients with neck infections using various imaging modalities and provide rapid accurate diagnoses leading to reduced morbidity and mortality.
