Medical Icons

Progress in conventional healthcare is intimately associated with numerous outstanding men and women who made seminal discoveries. This chapter offers a short, personal, and somewhat idiosyncratic list of individuals who through their discoveries became ‘medical icons’. Their lives and achievements are briefly described in biographical sketches. As we will see in section two of this book, these ‘icons’ generate a sharp contrast to the inventors of the bizarre treatments of alternative medicine.
