The Rhizomatic Writer

This concluding chapter explores the cross-fertilisation of creative collaboration and the benefits of interdisciplinarity. We look at emergent forms, which can be used to reach out to new audiences and raise awareness about the Climate Crisis, including: transmedia storytelling; interactive fiction; audio drama; digital writing: apps; online role-playing games; and site-specific commissions. These forms often have an ergodic quality which pushes the reader/player beyond the passive. We’ll look at ecoliteracy community projects; writing residencies; commissions; performance; and other multi-modal approaches. Drawing upon Deleuze and Guattari, we’ll consider the idea of being a ‘rhizomatic writer’—developing an organic creative practice, and mutually supportive ecosystems. Multimodality will be discussed, and the idea of ‘the writer in the world’—being collaborative, ethical, and socially-engaged. Rhizomatic thinking will be encouraged, and some transdisciplinary guidelines from ecogames will be offered.
