Salting Up Our Knowledge: The Fascinating Halophiles and Their Bioactive Metabolites with Biomedical Implications

Extremophiles are microorganisms that thrive in extreme environments due to their adaptability to these environment. Among them, halophiles have gained significant interest due to their capacity to secret bioactive compounds which have diverse applications. Halophilic bacteria and actinomycetes are known to produce antimicrobial compounds that have potential applications in the treatment of infections caused by multi drug-resistant bacteria. Halophilic compounds have also been studied for their anticancer activity, including the induction of apoptosis, inhibition of angiogenesis, inhibition of cell proliferation, and inhibition of invasion and migration of cancer cells. Furthermore, halophiles produce a variety of enzymes, including proteases, lipases, cellulases, xylanases, chitinases, and recently discovered DNases, that are active in high-salt concentrations. These enzymes are used in many different industrial processes, which could lead to improvements in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology products. All these unique qualities of halophilic bacteria make them valuable resources for the development of novel biotechnology products. This chapter explores the diverse array of bioactive compounds derived from halophiles and their wide applications. It gives an in-depth description about the compound, structure and activity of bioactives associated with antimicrobials, anticancer and enzymes and their characteristics and function.
