“Take a Stand”: Engaging Teacher Education Students in the Physicality of Learning

This chapter explores playful strategies used to engage college students in the physicality of learning. By integrating movement and social interaction into the classroom, all students can be involved in learning and thinking in an active way. When students are moving within the classroom, they are much more likely to be focused on the class activities and discussions. In addition, there is a tremendous increase in social interaction and problem-solving, two critical skills necessary for most careers. The Take a Stand strategy is discussed in depth, with multiple variations and applications to various content areas, in addition to other playful activities that build upon the physicality of learning, including Four Corners, Carousel Activities, and Tableau. The strategies examined engage students in conversation and reflection on their thoughts and ideas while stimulating attention through the cognitive benefits of movement. By incorporating this combination of content area thinking and playful activity, educators can create dynamic learning environments that foster student growth and enjoyment of the learning process.
