Teaching Safety Skills

This chapter discusses safety skills training for individuals with disabilities with an emphasis on active learning approaches consisting of behavioral skills training and in situ training. Following a discussion of in situ assessment for evaluating the effects of training, the chapter discusses active learning approaches to teaching safety skills for physical safety threats such as finding a firearm or poison, and social safety threats such as abduction and sexual abuse lures. Following a discussion of the research evaluating these training approaches, the chapter describes implications for practice and suggestions for future research.
